Most Popular Web Email Clients in the US

Posted by Phil Looney | Thursday, October 16, 2008

An interesting article and analysis from the blog Digital Inspiration concerning the recent data from Hitwise on the top 20 most popular websites in the US. One interesting thing that should not be missed by us in the eMarketing business is the rank of social networks in this list, with MySpace (3), Facebook (8), and YouTube (10) all ranking in the top 10. Just a reminder that we need to look at how we can effectively use these channels in our marketing efforts.

One of the interesting points that Digital Inspiration points out is this:
...if these numbers are any indication, here’s how the various web email sites now rank in terms of popularity: (a) Yahoo! Mail (b) Windows Live Hotmail (c) Gmail (d) AOL.

Interesting that AOL, which was once one of the most popular consumer webmail clients is now 4th on the list. Do these findings reflect what you're seeing as the make up of your email list?

That last line is the most important. It is not which mail client is the most used worldwide, but which client is most used by your customers.
