Don't Get Trapped!

Posted by Sharmila Sorenson | Friday, December 12, 2008

As the holiday season approaches, maintaining good Inbox deliverability will be increasingly difficult for eMarketers. This means more email flooding company and ISP servers from legitimate sources as well as spammers. Incoming email filters are set to help fight against real spam and protect email users, unfortunately this often means that our legitimate, CAN-SPAM compliant emails are also in for the battle, and often lose.

So how can we ensure we get to the Inbox?
Getting delivered to the Inbox is not as easy as it sounds; there are many hurdles your email has to go through to get there. Besides infrastructure, authentication, reputation, feedback loops, whitelists, blacklists, etc. – there is the common use of Spam Filtering software that often gets senders trapped.

All other criteria aside, Spam Filtering is a very common reason many eMarketer's emails end up in the Bulk/ Junk folder or get blocked. So, there's no time like now to review some common things that can get your email in these filter traps. This chart includes some common reasons emails are assigned higher points by filters – the more points your email is assigned, the greater the likelihood it will be filtered and sent to the Bulk/ Junk folder or blocked. Please note this list is only a sampling of common reasons for filtering that we often overlook when designing our marketing emails.

Happy Holidays and Happy Coding!
