The Problem with Social Media
Posted by Sundeep Kapur | Wednesday, February 10, 2010

20 town council members (from different towns) recently met an event to talk about youth engagement programs. This wise group of people included both elected and nominated members who have worked really hard to improve services to their constituents. The council members had a major issue - the youth it seems were too quick in discussion groups, not giving the council members an opportunity to listen and respond to requests on social media channels.
On a positive note, 3 out of the 20 members actually knew about Facebook - they knew how to use it and they even had Facebook pages. That's a grand 15%.
95% of the youth were on social media. That was their primary means of staying in touch.
Comment made at the council meeting, "These kids are just creating problems for us. They shouldn't be using Facebook."
Ouch!!

True problem with social media, is most people just don't get it.
It's another channel to communicate, for businesses today that means you need to monitor calls, incoming mail (both snail and email), and now monitor what your customers are saying via social media. And not just monitor and listen but engage.
It is this area that Facebook fails, they didn't listen to their users 10 months ago during the last round of changes, they (the users) got over it and adapted. The latest round of changes has sparked Facebook users once again to voice their disapproval. A quick search on Facebook of "Old Facebook" will quickly bring up the group "Facebook: SWITCH BACK TO THE OLD NEWS FEED!!!"... notice the all caps. I also found this status update on a friend of mine's page "Still have old facebook page thx god don't like the new one !!!!!"
Let's see if the Social Media leader can take advantage of social media.
